Some of the nature strip layout diagrams were confusing and parts of the guidelines were limiting resident’s options.

Current approach

Nature strip layout

The nature strip is broken up by multiple access points from roadside to footpath creating multiple ‘planting zones’ within a single nature strip (see below).

Limited options

A maximum allowable height of 30 cm makes plants other than ground covers difficult to consider, while not allowing planter boxes removes the ability to plant edible crops outside of the nature strip soil which may be contaminated.

Proposed approach

Nature strip layout

The street tree protection zone will function as the single access point from roadside to footpath. Planting is generally allowed across the nature strip with the exception of the tree protection zone and a 50 cm buffer around the outside of the nature strip (see below).

Limited options

The maximum plant height will be increased to 90 cm.

Relocatable planter boxes will be allowed to encourage the planting of edible crops.
